Central Motion

After spending the day at the beach yesterday on HDR Exposed, today we go back to New York.  Right now I just have so many pictures in my backlog to get put up, I probably will be jumping around quite a bit in the next few weeks.  I supposed that keeps it interesting.

To go along with the iconic New York landmark theme from a few days ago, today’s image is from Grand Central Terminal.  When we were in the city back in December, we stopped here so I could get a shot, however it was from the other side of the room, right when you walk, and I wasn’t completely thrilled with how the people milling around inside turned out.  Since I didn’t have my tripod for my previous visit here, I ended up getting too much of the floor and not enough of the ceiling.  I think that I corrected most of the issues I had this go around though.  My favorite thing about this shot however is the girl peaking around the guy standing right in front of me.  I noticed her glancing up at me while I was taking the shot and I’m glad that she did so in a usable bracket.

A lot less involved in the processing here compared to my last image.  This is a nine shot HDR processed with Photomatix then shipped to Photoshop.  I tonemapped the +2 exposure to apply the mask to the entire lower part of the image, which was a long enough exposure to give me nice motion blur, but also short enough to make sure that some people were standing still.  After that I applied an S Curve to increase contrast and a 60% Tonal Contrast filter to the entire image.  Also threw on a touch of a cooling filter to tone down the reds a little bit.  Decreased saturation and increased vibrance a pinch and called it a day.

Thanks for stopping by today everyone.  See you tomorrow.

Very nice image Dave. Love the color, tones and textures. A very different contrast from the image I saw this weekend. Due to the hurricane, there was a photo of Grand Central with no one in it. Hard to imagine.

Thats a great shot. I’ve stood on that balcony many times. The lighting in there is quite tricky, with all the big windows in an otherwise dimly lit space. A 9-frame HDR is a great choice for this location. Hard to believe it was totally empty all last weekend. Nice work.

Very nice Dave. The motion of the people and the symmetry of the terminal provide a nice balance.

This is cool. I like how that lady is ghosted yet slightly glowing in a way. It’s a cool effect.

Wonderful to see this Dave, and it brings back many memories of standing in that very spot, it would be interesting to know just how many photographers have stood on that balcony landing

This is great. The ghosting really works well in an image like this.
