Today we return to the New York City HDRs after spending two days looking at various candids around the city. Thank you to all of you who stopped by to check them out. This will also be a shorter post, as today is my Friday because we are heading to Salt Fort Lake in Ohio for a little weekend getaway of camping and boating with some good friends, and I have some loose ends to tie up before I head out. Been looking forward to this for a few months now and excited that it is finally here.

Above is the South Street Seaport, on the western edge of lower Manhattan. The first shot I posted from my most recent trip to New York of the Brooklyn Bridge was taken from here, and it is one of my favorite places to do night photography in the city. This is the view of the start of the pier and some of the restaurants. I tried to get this shot two years ago, but someone kicked my tripod and it ended up looking, well, like you would expect a picture to look like if someone kicked your tripod while you were in the middle of a long exposure. I really like how this one turned out, especially with all the people walking by.
For the processing, this is a seven exposure HDR processed with Photomatix and edited in CS5. I tonemapped the +1 EV shot to mask in the blurs of people walking and on the bench. I applied an overall S Curve to give the shot some contrast, then removed the Color Cast with a filter in Color Efex. Applied a 30% Enter the Dragon filter in onOne and a 25% Tonal Contrast Filter in Color Efex. Both of these were applied only to the lower part of the scene, not the sky. Finally, applied a high pass filter to sharpen up the shot and that’s that.
Since I won’t be around, I hope that you all have a great weekend. See you on Monday.

Great light and processing Dave. The colors just pop. I can even see the building where I used to work eons ago. Have a great early weekend.

Wow, Dave. This is just sick, man. What a fantastic shot. Love the pop in the colors contrasted by the softer lights in the background buildings. Excellent processing!

Dude, I don’t know what to say about this. There is so much happening, but it flows so well. Its like an Orgy of colors. Absolutely stunning.

Man, I dig the contrast of an old ship against a modern city. Love it!

Unbelievable colors in this shot. I also like the effect of the movement of people. It all comes together very well.

Wow this is incredible. I don’t know where to look first. The color in the foreground really pops against the muted background. Incredible processing.

Fantastic Dave – The colors in this are just brilliant! I love that there is still a little motion on the pier below you, it makes the image seem even more alive.
