Good morning everyone and happy Monday. I’m back after a long weekend with some good friends in central Ohio doing a little camping. We had a blast and Monday seemed to come just a little too quick, but I have a tone of great shots from the weekend that I will hopefully get around to this week. I also am finishing up on a photography assignment for a major regional publication this week, so stay tuned for more news from that.

Today’s shot is a bit of a touristy shot, but one that I’m happy with none the less. Believe it or not I had never made my way past the Flat Iron building in New York in my previous three visits so it is something that I knew I wanted to capture this time while I was there. I made my way past it first thing on Friday morning before the clouds broke and the sun came out. This is such an overly photographed building and I wanted to try to put my own spin on it, so, like a lion in the jungle, I wanted to capture it in its natural setting and pull in different aspects of the busy city on a weekday morning. I waited for some taxis to come by (didn’t take very long), as well as some people walking towards me to give a nice frame of reference and fired off my brackets.
This is a seven exposure HDR processed with Photomatix and edited in CS5. I tonemapped the +2 exposure to mask in the entire ¼ of the image for the moving cars and people. I then applied a Pro Contrast filter (40%) to the entire image and a Tonal Contrast filter (35%) to just the buildings and street, both in Color Efex. Next I loaded the image in onOne PhotoTools and applied an Enter the Dragon (25%), Grunge (30%), Golden Hour Enhancer (10%) and Blue Dawn Leonidas filters (5%) to the shot a nice dramatic feel. Finally I did some Dodging at the top of the Flat Iron building to lighten it up and then did a 50% Burn to the entire sky (midtones only), a 20% Burn of the highlights on the sky and finally an S Curve to the sky only to give it just one last little bit of punch.
Will do my best to catch up today on all of your fantastic work. I hope that you all have a great week.

Fantastic as usual Dave. While I love the shot as a whole the line of yellow cabs really makes the shot more then just your usual picture of the flatiron building.

Love the look of the wide angle Dave. The perspective is spot on and the cloud is perfectly position. Well done as usual.
I like that you didn’t take the usual up close shots like so many others. Nicely done!

Great perspective and processing. I like the natural setting perspective that demonstrates the environment around this famous landmark.
