Soaring Wings

Niklas Lidstrom

You know, it’s funny what a difference a year can make.

Pavel Datsyuk

Last year, when the Penguins played host to the Detroit Red Wings, the Wings were decimated with injuries and the Pens won easily.  This year (more specifically last night) quite the opposite was true, with the Penguins battling a depleted lineup and the Wings at full strength.  With the world’s best player (Sidney Crosby), three defenseman (Kris Letang, Zybenk Michalek, Roberto Bortuzzo and Ben Lovejoy) and a host of role players (Richard Park, Dustin Jeffrey and  Steve MacIntyre) all out with injuries, the Pens were a little shorthanded.

Valtteri Filppula

Now that’s not to say that they can’t win without these players.  They made it to the palyoffs last year in the absence of both Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.  But they just seem to be in a bit of a funk right now and when you play a team as solid as the Red Wings, some nights it just wasn’t meant to be.  The Pens 4-1, which marks the first time this year that I’ve seen them lost in regulation.  The Wings showed why they are 9-2 in their last 11 games and consistently among the lead leaders.

Henrik Zetterberg

Though my team wasn’t victorious, my camera was, as I parked myself on the visitors’ side during warm ups to grab some shots of the Wings warming up.  It wasn’t nearly as crowded as the home team side, so I was able to get some pretty cool captures.  The top image is the captain of the Red Wings Niklas “the Perfect Human” Lidstrom.  He earned the nickname for being 42 years old and still being one of the top three defenseman in the league year after year.  Next is Pavel Datsyuk, one of the most skilled centers in the game, with arguably the best hands/stick handling ability in the league.  The third image is Valtteri Filppula, a mainstay on Detroit’s line who is a consistent producer.  Directly above is Henrik Zetterberg, who kills penalties, scores goals, plays on the power play, does it all and does it all well.  Below is Todd Bertuzzi, most infamously known for his sucker punch on Steve Moore of the Colorado Avalance which landed him a 17 month suspension from the world of hockey.  He is now an enforcer on the top line for the Wings.

Todd Bertuzzi

Thanks for stopping by today everyone.  See you all tomorrow.

You’ve made my day Dave. I happen to be a HUGE Red Wing fan and these pics of some of the players are very, very good, not to mention your assessment of their talents! Thanks for sharing bud!

Awesome shots Dave! I’m kinda a hater towards the Wing’s being an Avalanche fan. Awhile back it always seemed like they met in the playoffs with the Wing’s coming out on top way too much!

Awesome captures Dave. Stay Optimistic. There’s a chance that Crosby may still be back.

Love that Bertuzzi shot. He looks like he’s sizing up one of the Penguins! Shame about Sid, hope he comes back soon.

I have to be honest Dave – I could care less about hockey. But I can tell you one thing – your shots are freaking awesome. It takes real talent to capture stuff this good, so well done. I find it hard to get a portrait right when they are sitting still. But sliding by quickly on ice skates? You’re good my friend. Keep it up.
