South Side

Last week I spent a couple of days stepping out of my normal HDR zone to share some single exposure edits, some macros and other photos that you wouldn’t normally see here at HDR Exposed.  Well, I had so much fun with it that I decided to give it another go today!

Last Friday I rode the trolley from our neighborhood down to the South Side of Pittsburgh, as I was meeting some my wife and a few others for dinner at the famous Hofbrauhaus.  Located in South Side Works, the German restaurant is just about 28 blocks from the station where I disembarked and I wanted to take the opportunity to get some candids and other urbexy type shots.  Armed with only my 50mm I set off in the wind and the snow.  The very first thing that I came upon was the set of garage doors that you see above.  The purple doors really caught my eye.

Right past the garage in the first shot there are a collection of office buildings that used to be home to part of the rail system that ran along the Monongahela River.  Drawn to the shape of the fire escape and the windows, I fired off a few shots.

The only shot that I knew I wanted to get before I made my journey to the South Side was of this tunnel.  I spend my Saturday mornings running by this every weekend and always found it curious that there was a tunnel in the middle of this huge wall.

As you venture further down East Carson Street the density of bars and restaurants dramatically increases and I wanted to take the chance to grab a few candids.  This is certainly something that you don’t see on a Friday night in the South Side: someone reading a book.  With a little help from VSCO I did my best to create a film look to this…anyone have a preference for the color or B&W?

Along with all the bars, restaurants and tattoo parlors you will encounter a handful of these little trinket/knock off shops.  Who doesn’t love a little bokeh every now and then?

The last shot for today is of a girl smoking a cigarette outside of the Beehive coffeehouse.  I was trying to get and she was actually exhaling, but I had to settle for this one instead.

These were all processed with onOne’s Perfect Effects (unless otherwise noted).  Don’t get me wrong, I love processing HDRs, but sometimes it is nice to process single exposures too.

That’s all for today folks.  Thanks a lot for stopping by.

I really like the guy reading the book in color. He stands out more in the color version and kind of blends in the the b&w version. Very nice shots! I love the DOF created with the 50mm. I think I need to do some more shooting with my 50mm.

It’s nice to see you step outside your primary style. I love the second image (fire escape), prefer the color to B&W in this instance, and also really like the bokeh sunglasses.
