Take your time

So I wasn’t just in New York City shooting HDRs for a whole week!  Aside from snapping brackets around the city I shot some candids and, with the help of my new B+W 10 stop ND filter, some long exposures.  I thought that I would switch it up a little bit today since I posted a couple New York skylines the last couple of days.  The shot above was taken just outside Lincoln Center at the intersection of Columbus Avenue and Broadway.  The sun was just setting and giving the whole area this nice warm glow, so I set up the tripod and captured this 90 second exposure.

Another area that I wanted to give long exposures a shot was in Times Square during the day.  For this shot I got there late afternoon, when the line was forming for the discount ticket booth.  Two minutes later I had an almost eerie scene, with what looked like ghosts milling all about.

I also knew that I wanted to capture Bethesda Fountain in Central Park.  This shot was taken on my last morning there, when I got up early to head into the city.  Even with some people milling about, this 71 second exposure all but made them disappear, aside from the one couple you can see in the back middle of the frame.

I have some more of these to share as well, just didn’t get to them yet, so look for more in the next few weeks!

Thanks for stopping by today everyone, see you all tomorrow.

Great stuff Dave. I really like how you have the crowd moving past you on that second image. I was in NYC this past weekend and wasn’t able to shoot much so I am envious of these.

Glowing city

sunset from the top of the rock in new york city hdr

The view from the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center is like no other view in the city, no matter what time of day you make the trip to the 70th floor.  While it is 16 floors below that of the outside deck at the Empire State Building and 32 floors below the observation deck in the same building, the view of the New York skyline with the ESB standing so prominently in the middle is definitely something to behold.  Also present this time around which wasn’t there last summer when I made the trek to the Top of the Rock is the new World Trade Center Building, which you can see just off to the right of the Empire State Building.  And just off to the right of that, way off in the distance, you can just make out Lady Liberty, though it appears as little more than a speck.  On the opposite side of the frame you can even make out the distinct outlines of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, though the buildings obscure a bit of the view.

Last year when I was here, I didn’t make it up to the top until almost 8:00, which definitely gave me some breathtaking views.  However I knew that this time I wanted to get up there a little early, settle into a prime spot to be able to watch the sun go down.  So I bought my tickets online to avoid the long wait and after having a couple of beverages at Johnny Utah’s just around the corner, I moseyed on over to Rockefeller Center.  Sometimes being a single traveler isn’t too bad, as I was whisked right up since there was just one more space available on the elevator.  Once at the top, I found a nice little area just slightly off to the right of the ESB, which gave me a great view down Manhattan.  Taking bracket after bracket as the sun dipped lower and lower in the sky, this is probably one of my favorite shots from my time up there, which was almost three hours.  I loved how half the city was in shadow and the way that the light was striking the sides of the buildings, really giving a sense that the whole place was glowing.

Like I said, I have quite a few from my night up there, but I didn’t want to diminish this one by posting it along with a handful of others.  Look forward to more of these soon!

Thanks for swinging by today everyone.  Catch you all tomorrow.

Colors in the night

new york city skyline at night from the pier in hoboken hdr

Good morning everyone!  Well, after a week long hiatus in New York City, I’m back!  Back online, back on the blog, facebook, twitter, etc.  It was a great time in the city and my shoot at the MLB Network studios went really well, as did the rest of my time there.  I hit everywhere on my shot list and then some, so I look forward to sharing them all with you over the next couple of weeks.

We’ll start out with a shot that I’ve taken a few times before, but this time around I think it is my favorite.  I stayed with a friend who lives in Hoboken, New Jersey, just across the river from New York City.  In Hoboken there is a pier that offers an outstanding view of the city, and this is a shot from that pier.  The way the Empire State Building cuts through the skyline and the whole city seems to glow and radiate color is just something to behold.

Just a quick post for today since I have a bit of catching up to do at work, but expect many more shots from the Big Apple over the net couple of weeks.  I look forward to seeing what I missed of all of your work as well!

Thanks for swing by today folks!  See you all tomorrow.

City life

new york city skyline from hoboken hdr

Today I’m off to New York City for a week of shooting, including a couple of days at the MLB Network!  Really excited for the opportunity and going to make the most of my time there.  The weather is supposed to be a little subpar, but hopefully it will hold out long enough for me to walk around the city.  I do plan on visiting some places that I haven’t been before, like some of the museums.  We’ll see how the schedule works out!  I’ll try to pop in when I can, but I don’t think that I will be posting anything until I get back.  This shot is from my trip there last summer of the New York skyline from Hoboken, where I will be staying this time as well.

Thanks for stopping by today and I hope that you all have a great week!

Along the bridge

Just a quick post this morning as I have quite a bit to get done today before I head out of town tomorrow for a week!  I’ll try to keep in touch the best I can, but I will only have my iPad in New York.  I took this shot a few weeks back on a photowalk with my Dad and Rich McPeek around downtown Pittsburgh.  We started downtown and made out way through PPG Place, to the top of a parking garage and then over towards the North Shore.  I made a quick stop on the Clemente Bridge, which is what is picture here.  Since being turned into a pedestrian bridge for Pittsburgh Pirate games, many lights have been added to the supports, which makes it really glow at night!

Thanks for swinging by today folks.  See you all tomorrow!
